The One Thing We're Afraid to Lose!

Hello,

Last week was a roller coaster ride with so much going on in my business, meetings, programs I am enrolled in, pollen allergies, meeting deadlines, etc. that I showed up for an appointment one week earlier. When I found the office closed on Saturday, I checked the invite and there it was - Day and time -right, Date - wrong! I couldn't stop laughing because it had not happened to me in a long time.

Well, the reason I shared the incident was that it was a blessing in disguise because on our way back, we came across a strawberry farm. So, we stopped for some strawberry picking on a nice sunny pleasant day.

It was the best end to a whirlwind of a week I could ask for. Sometimes, going with the flow instead of fighting it brings the best of gifts.

What's an idea worth?

Today I am bringing a perspective to you based on a conversation with a client where they discussed the toxic culture in their team and how more than one person including their manager has taken credit for their ideas.

Understandably, they were really upset. It's a common scenario and multiple clients have shared similar stories but we dug deeper into their specific case. During the session, there were some misunderstandings that got cleared, some perspective shifts that happened.

Then they asked me for my opinion and one tip or tool to steal-proof their ideas.

We again dug deeper into that and one of my questions to better understand them and their desire was: What will it feel like – keeping the credit where it’s due?

I’ll feel happy and satisfied, they answered.

Why are we afraid of losing an idea to someone and how can we avoid it?

Coming to the point that I thought would help you too was when at the end they wanted me to share one practical tip to get the credit of their idea back.

They believed strongly that apart from understand why the credit was so important to them or taking the precautions before the credit for the idea taken, there has to be a way to take the credit of a stolen idea back.

My take: Execution

In all the cheering and admiration for brainpower and cool ideas, there's a hero that often gets forgotten: good old-fashioned ‘doing’.

Yup, getting stuff done!

It might not sound as glamorous as being the idea guy or gal, but trust me, it’s where the buck stops. Sometimes, folks think of those who are all about action as just the followers, not the leaders. But that’s not giving them enough credit (pun intended).

You see, an idea, no matter how shiny and new it feels, is just a starting point. The real point is what you do with that idea.

Instead of worrying about who thought of something first or getting upset if someone else runs with it, the key is to focus on how you can bring that idea to life, make it better, or even inspire the next big thing. The difference you make by executing an idea—is where the real gold lies.

Now, about the second point they mentioned - finding happiness & satisfaction.

Real talk?

True happiness comes from the inside, reflecting our actions, contributions, and the way we touch the lives of others.

Satisfaction comes from moving forward, solving real problems, facing challenges, and finally seeing your vision come to life, not by being known as the person with all the great ideas.

So, isn't it time to stop chasing that unique, never-been-done-before idea?

Also, don’t ditch an idea just because it seems someone beat you to it.

Success doesn’t only come from what hasn’t been done; it often is about putting your spin on its execution or using it to solve a problem uniquely yours.

e.g., Starbucks or Apple weren’t the first to think of coffee shops or smartphones. They saw existing ideas and thought, “How can we do this differently? How can we make this better?”

And that’s precisely where they found their success. It wasn’t the novelty of the idea but the execution, the determination to bring a vision to life in their own unique way, that made all the difference.

Happiness and fulfillment come from what we do, how we help others, and the good changes we make. When we turn our ideas into actions and solve real problems, we not only make the world better but also feel a deep, lasting happiness and pride in ourselves.

So, instead of chasing the fleeting high of “Hey, I thought of that,” go for the deeper, richer satisfaction of “I made that happen.”

Be the one who does—the mover and shaker whose actions say it all. That’s where true happiness lies.

Keep moving, keep innovating,

Meenu

MEENU DATTA COACH & AUTHOR How to Start Caring When You Don't Care Anymore. Apathy/Lack of Interest/Passiveness in the workplace is more common than we might think, especially in all the fast-paced, high-pressure industries. According to energy leadership expert Bruce D. Schneider, the lowest level of energy we operate at is rooted in apathy—a state characterized by thoughts of helplessness and disengagement. Apathy is a state of not caring, of not finding any hope or excitement about...
